Weekend exploring Inle Lake, Myanmar

I took a short break from my work in Nay Pyi Taw, the new capital of Myanmar and travelled to Inle Lake in Shan State. I stayed in the village of Nyaungshwe at the north end of the lake at the ViewPoint lodge & fine cuisine hotel. Absolutely faultless- the food was superb, the rooms very nice and the hotel’s architecture very original and nicely fitting the surroundings – great service with friendly staff.

Most Intha people get around using traditional flat-bottomed skiffs propelled by a single wooden paddle. The Intha technique of leg rowing – where one leg is  wrapped around the paddle to drive the blade through the water in a snake-like  motion – is unique.

Silk-weaving is another very important industry, producing high-quality hand-woven silk fabrics of distinctive design called Inle longyi. A unique fabric from the lotus plant fibres is produced only at Inle lake.

Dotted around the lake are the stilt-house villages and  floating gardens of the Intha tribe. The floating garden beds are formed when the farmers gather up lake-bottom weeds from the deeper parts of the lake, bring them back in boats and make them into floating beds in their garden areas, anchored by bamboo poles. These gardens rise and fall with changes in the water level, and so are resistant to flooding.

Boats are the main means of transport around the lake and I explored the lake by hiring a motorised canoes (a little like Thai long-tail boats) for a day which cost around USD15.
