Small BIG Hotel in Singapore

It is really hard to find a reasonable hotel in Singapore so I googled a lot and finally found this BIG Hotel.

I followed some reviews in travel sites, such as Agoda and Tripadviser and booked a double room, even though it was only me staying this time. (Some people say that shower room in the single room is not usable..) I took a taxi from the Changi Airport and asked to go to the BIG Hotel but as I expected, the driver did not know the hotel. So, I asked him to take me to Sunshine Plaza which is well known to most taxi drivers and opposite the BIG Hotel. When on the Middle Road, it was not difficult to find the hotel but there was no entrance where taxi could stop. You need get dropped off on the opposite side of the road and carry your suitcase to the hotel, which was fine for me as mine was tiny.

The double room was comfortable for me though, however if I needed to share with someone, it might have been a bit too small.

Room was nicely decorated and spotlessly clean.

Internet connection was good and included in the room price. There is no kettle in the room but the hot water is available in the common space so you can bring your thermo to get it whenever you want.

They have a nice bar and cafe. I did not try the bar but cafe was with good ambiance but one cup of cappuccino cost me almost 6$!

Overall, I am quite satisfied with the hotel, as the location is good and the room you can get is decent. I recommend you to book this hotel through Agoda (I got some discount and the room rate I got was around USD120/internet included, breakfast excluded).

Cheese Mania! – Jones the grocer, Dempsey Hills, Singapore –

Do you know Dempsey Hills in Singapore?
Dempsey Hills were formerly know as the British Army barracks, it has now been converted into nice restaurants, bars and shops. It is not too far from the city centre (around 10 minutes ride by taxi). There is a shuttle bus service to Dempsey Hills from/to the city centre but I took a cab (and it was not very difficult to find the one back to the centre). It was quite pleasant to walk in the compound full of greenery but it could be a bit hot… I found it manageable.

My best pick was the grocery cum cafe/restaurant named “Jones the Grocer”.

I had some salad (S$15) with salmon (add S$15).

They sell wide variety of groceries including tea, coffee, pastas, ham, olives, chocolates, nuts, salts,,, and CHEESES!!
I am a cheese maniac and my favourite is the Montgomery Cheddar. Unfortunately, I cannot find it in Jakarta so I was hoping to find some in Singapore,,,, and then, yes! I found it!! There was a separate “cheese room” in the shop with a good selection of cheeses from all over the world. I was extremely happy when I found my Montgomery Cheddar on the shelf!! (it was a bit pricey…) Anyway, I purchased three varieties: Montgomery Cheddar, Quickes Goat and Mimolette.

I tasted all of them and they all were fantastic!! I wish there was a shop like the Jones here in Jakarta…

Jamie’s Italian in Singapore

I am now in Singapore for work and took this opportunity to visit Jamie Oliver’s restaurant! I have been a huge fan of Jamie Oliver since I was a student in London so I was really excited to try out his first restaurant in Asia.

The restaurant was full despite it being the beginning of the week (and it is not even close to business district…). I was extremely excited…

I ordered “Prawn Linguine” as a main dish and “Humble Salad” as a side dish.

Hummmm. Unfortunately, I was not very impressed by either of the dish… Compared with what you get, it was too pricey (especially the Humble Salad which costs S$9.50!) and the food was not very special… Possibly my expectations were too high but I do not think I will return here again. However, the ambiance of the restaurant was good.
