Ovyond – Healthy Homemade Yogurt from Jakarta

Ovyond1

We found while googling “Ovyond” selling healthy yogurts in Jakarta. They sell many choices of yogurts, such as Greek style, Swiss natural, Caspian, and more. You can also have them with fruits toppings (mango, blueberries, strawberries).

They come with different sizes as well (500g, 300g and 100g), and the costs varies from Rp.20,000 to Rp.90,000 per jug.

You can order by SMS, Go-jek and with other social media. We texted them and they arranged delivery with Go-jek and we paid on delivery. They were very efficient and response was quick and with perfect English. When my order was delivered, there was a happy surprise, a bonus 100g Caspian yogurt for a trial!

We already tasted Greek yogurt with blueberry and mango, and were very happy with the taste 🙂  We will order from them again definitely!

Vung Tau on the southern tip of Vietnam.

Vung Tau, Vietnam

Vung Tau 2sml_edited

Vung Tau is at the mouth of the Saigon River at the southern tip of Viet Nam. Vung Tau enjoys a spectacular location on a peninsula, with ocean on three sides, and the light and sea air makes it a refreshing break from sultry Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City).

Vung Tau 3_edited

Vung Tau is a remarkably civilised-looking city of broad boulevards, imposing colonial-era buildings and accommodating the tastes (and wallets).

Historically few travellers ever bothered to visit the city, but new transport connections have put Vung Tau on the map. Hydrofoil links from central HCMC are now excellent, and the new coastal road to Mui Ne via Ho Trang offers a tempting, off-the-beaten-track route. I took a taxi from HCMH to Vung Tau which cost 1,400,000 VND and the drive was 3 hrs.

 The Lighthouse

Vung Tau Lighthouse_edited

Built by the French, this 1910 lighthouse boasts a spectacular 360-degree view of Vung Tau. From Cau Da Pier on Ð Ha Long, take a sharp right on the alley north of the Hai Au Hotel, then roll on up the hill. Although Jesus and the lighthouse look temptingly close, it is not possible to walk or drive directly between them, as there is a military base in the hills here.

White Palace

Whiet Palace 3sml_edited

The White Palace was the beach resort built for the French Governor General of their Indo-China adventure that lasted about 150 years. There are displayed a number of 15th Century Portuguese cannon from old warships that protected their Far East Colonies such as Macau as well as a large French Colonial style building on this strategic site. The White Palace displays a detailed signboard complete with forty historical maps.

It costs just VND 5000 a ticket to get in to have a look at this beautiful old building with a great deal of history behind it. Big room and high ceilings and a great display of old Chinese pottery.

And then a coffee and cool down under the shady trees along the sea front. Well worthwhile!

“Bat Trang” the most ancient pottery village near Hanoi

 Potery Village 4 sml

Bat Trang village is the most ancient and famous pottery village in Viet Nam.  Bat Trang pottery is familiar with Vietnamese people all over the country, and at the same time has been favoured in many countries in the region and world alike.

Potery Village 2 sml   Potery Village 1 sml

The success of Bat Trang village, also relies on the Bat Trang craftsmen who boasts skilful hands, sensitiveness and talent to bring a senseless block of clay into life and convert them into a masterpiece. To turn clays into pottery, craftsmen have to follow some steps including selecting, processing and mixing clays, shaping , flawing, glazing, and baking. The experience of Bat Trang people is ” first criteria is the Clay second the glaze and third the baking”.

About 12 km from Old Quarter, I got there by taxi and it cost me 350,000 Vietnamese Dong for a one way ride (Approx. USD 18). Also, it is possible to get there by motorbike or catch publish bus number 47 from Long Bien station which goes directly to Bat Trang village. You learn more about Bat Trang village and have chance to practise how to make a product from clay.

There were nice views of Red River.

The shops are nice with lots of pottery selections. It was fun to browse and walk around the pottery village. The people were welcoming and friendly. However, I would not recommend eating there as I could find only one restaurant there (the food was not up to the standard….). I would recommend it for a half day visit  from Hanoi.

Sumo! Japan’s national sport

Sumo stable sumo2

My interest in Sumo started when it was televised in the UK Channel 4 in the 90’s watching the likes of Chiyonofuji and Konishiki the Hawaiian. When I visited Tokyo this April, I was very fortunate and privileged to visit the Tagonoura sumo stable to watch sumo wrestlers training. I arrived with a Japanese friend who was an avid fan of sumo at the stable around 9am and left around 11.30am.

??????????????????????????????? sumo7

I was informed that there are six divisions in sumo: makuuchi (maximum 42 wrestlers), jūryō (fixed at 28 wrestlers), makushita (fixed at 120 wrestlers), sandanme (fixed at 200 wrestlers), jonidan (approximately 185 wrestlers), and jonokuchi (approximately 40 wrestlers). Wrestlers enter sumo in the lowest jonokuchi division and, ability permitting, work their way up to the top division. A broad demarcation in the sumo world can be seen between the wrestlers in the top two divisions known as sekitori and those in the four lower divisions, known commonly by the more generic term rikishi.

Wrestlers are promoted or demoted according to their performance in six official tournaments held throughout the year.

There were 8 wrestlers training that day, some senior and others junior. Three top wrestlers from the Tagonoura stable that attended the training were well known. I was very surprised to have such close access to these wresters and later when I watched the sumo basho on TV, I was able to recognise them. They were extremely friendly and I am able to speak to them after the training session.

Kisenosato Yutaka, born July 3, 1986 as Yutaka Hagiwara is a sumo wrestler from Ibaraki, Japan. He reached the top makuuchi division in 2004 at the age of just 18. His highest rank to date is ōzeki, which he reached in January 2012.

sumo9

Takayasu Akira, born February 28, 1990 made his professional debut in 2005, and reached the top makuuchi division in 2011, the first wrestler born in the Heisei era to do so. His highest rank has been komusubi. He is renowned for his Fighting Spirit.

sumo3

Takanoyama Shuntarō born 21 February 1983 as Pavel Bojar is a sumo wrestler from Prague, Czech Republic. He is the first man from the Czech Republic to join the professional sport in Japan. Due to his light weight, he has difficulty in beating his opponents, despite his skill. However, in May 2011 he earned promotion to the sekitori ranks. He made his debut in the top makuuchi division in September 2011.

I thoroughly enjoyed my morning at the sumo stable watching the wrestlers train. Hardest part was to stay still and quiet for 3 hours as it was considered as etiquette when attending the training session.

Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) in Japan

Sakura 2 Sakura 4

We visited Japan in April 2014 and it was the best time of the year to view cherry blossoms. We were in Toyama city where we saw Cherry blossoms along the Matsukawa river and on top of a hill close to the city. Stunning!

Sakura 5

Sakura 10

Cherry Blossoms are also commonly known as Sakura in Japan. The cherry blossom (sakura) is Japan’s unofficial national flower. It has been celebrated for many centuries and holds a very prominent position in Japanese culture. There are many dozens of different cherry tree varieties in Japan, most of which bloom for just a couple of days in spring. The Japanese celebrate that time of the year with hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties under the blooming trees.

I would recommend visiting Japan during the Sakura blooming season.
